What is SMED?

SMED stands for Single Minute Exchange of Dies, concept originally developed in Japan for Toyota in order to change from making one model to another in less than 10 minutes i.e. "single minute". It was then applied to Automotive Industry to reduce set up times for production of pressed car parts and today has been applied successfully in all industry and service sectors in very diverse applications.

The technique concentrates on change-over profile, which is the time taken to changeover a machine from the last ‘GOOD’ product of one run to the first ‘GOOD’ product of the next production run at the acceptable speed.

EMS runs 3-day on-site SMED workshops to teach, apply and implement the SMED techniques on your processes to significantly reduce change over time and develop a culture of continuous improvement within the operations team.
